Nevaeh’s New Beginning

Neveah had a job and an apartment. Her problem wasn’t that she couldn’t afford to raise a kid; it was that she’d never wanted to be anyone’s mom. She was on the Pill when she hooked up with a hot guy who somehow forgot to mention he was actually married. (That didn’t come up until Neveah told him she was pregnant– with twins. Then he skedaddled.) She did her best until she couldn’t, anymore. She loved her twins but she knew in her heart that raising them was not the best choice for them nor for her. Neveah couldn’t rely on her own family for help, and the twins’ dad and his wife turned her down, as well. So after calling around and getting bad vibes from all the skeezy adoption “consultants” online, Neveah decided to find a reputable adoption agency in Texas instead, and a search for “free Texas adoption help” led her to Abrazo. After talking with LaLa and Elizabeth for a month and meeting with them face-to-face, she made an open adoption plan and she couldn’t be happier with the family she chose for her twins. “We all got a new beginning! I’m so glad I put my trust in Abrazo,” Neveah says.

Krystle’s Last Resort

When Krystle reached out to Abrazo, she’d been living in a homeless encampment with an abusive boyfriend who wasn’t the babydaddy of the toddler she’d left with “friends” in a rundown home. She’d considered adoption during the pregnancy, but didn’t go through with it because her baby was drug-exposed so she thought nobody would want him. Krystle couldn’t support her baby, and she didn’t trust the friends she’d left him with, so eventually a caseworker for the homeless gave her Abrazo’s number. Abrazo got her son out of the trap house just in time, as Child Protective Services came looking for him there later that week. Our agency got Krystle a safe place to stay, too, and she got to choose just the family she wanted to raise her little boy. “I wish I’d known about Abrazo back when I was pregnant,” she said. Krystle is back out on the streets by her choice, she says, but she still checks in with Abrazo whenever she wants an update. (And although she’d originally claimed she had no family anywhere, she eventually called back about wanting her mom and sister to be able to keep in touch with her son’s new parents, too, so her open adoption now includes them as well.)

Lili’s Little Flower

Most of the moms that Abrazo serves are women in their 20s or 30s, so when we got the call about a twelve-year-old who’d just had a baby, it kind of broke of Abrazo’s staff’s hearts, to be honest. Lili was barely old enough to even understand about sex, and her mother was shocked to learn her baby was pregnant. It was Lili’s mom who called us to make an adoption plan, and we immediately went to meet with them. When we did, though, it became apparent that neither Lili nor her mom really wanted the baby to be adopted. “I know an adoptive couple could offer a child more, but we do have plenty of love to share,” the grandmother-to-be told us. What they needed most was to learn more about community options and local resources that would enable Lili’s little flower to bloom in their loving home, with her young mom and grandmom, and that was their right to choose that destiny, so Abrazo offered counseling and aftercare, and assured them adoption could always be available later on should plans change.

How Jake Manned Up

Jake and his girlfriend had been together since high school, when she first got pregnant. He’d dropped out and got a warehouse job, and his girlfriend became pregnant again, so the second baby came along too quick for him to go back to get his GED. Their parents helped when they could, but it seemed like there was never enough money to keep them afloat. They started to fight, then they split up and Jake’s girlfriend took off with her new guy, leaving him to raise their kids. A few years later, Jake was stunned to get a call from the State: she’d abandoned a baby at the hospital after claiming that he was the baby’s dad. He knew he wasn’t, but he didn’t want the State to put the baby in foster care, so Jake and his new girlfriend picked up the baby from the hospital. After a few months, they looked up “free Texas adoption help” on the Internet, and found Abrazo. “I gotta man up, because I don’t want no baby to grow up without the home it deserves,” Jake said at the time.  Abrazo helped find a wonderful new parents for the baby, and if the baby’s birthmom ever does want to know the adoptive family, they’ll welcome her into the open adoption, as well.

Myra’s Tiny Miracle

Whatever one’s feelings about illegal immigrants, surely everyone can agree that nobody should get SAed by a human trafficker– and yet that was exactly what happened to one young woman from South America. She’d paid a coyote who came up with an additional bill she could not pay, and by the time she learned she’d gotten pregnant by him, he was long gone. A hospital social worker referred her to Abrazo when she delivered prematurely, and she was terribly frightened to ask for help. Abrazo’s Spanish-speaking staff rushed to help, and not only did they provide the compassion she needed, they offered her profiles of homestudy-ready couples who also spoke Spanish, just as she did. The family she chose was truly the answer to her prayers. Myra wasn’t able to stay in America, but she does keep in touch when she can. And we’ll never forget her sweet note after the adoption was done: “Gracias por ser los ángeles de la adopción que mi bebé y yo más necesitábamos. Nos han bendecido a ambos.”

Abrazo is proud to be in its 32nd year of offering free Texas adoption help to pregnant females, parents-in-crisis, newly-delivered mothers, abandoned surrogates, families in need, and grandparents or legal guardians who want better for the child/ren in their care. There are many reason why good people make good adoption decisions, and Abrazo is a good adoption agency for those who need help they can trust.
