  2. Hi! We mailed our inquiry pre-app just yesterday! I am loving the forums...answers to so many questions...and questions I didn't even know I had if that makes any sense! Looking forward to finding out more. Good Luck to everyone!

Welcome Allie & Ross! You have come to a place FULL of information and A LOT of support. If you have questions that you may not find the answers to on the forum, just ask. biggrin.gif

    Blessings

  3. Kenny I think you read that wrong. No one is saying you & Michelle view international adoption as trendy. AP's (including you and Michelle) are not who we are talking about. I'm talking about reactions I get from people who have not adopted at all and who know nothing about adoption when they hear that our kids were adopted domestically.

I think the media along with celebrity attention have fueled too many misperceptions.

    Suzi,

Yes that is what I was referring to, "reactions from people who have not adopted at all and who know nothing about adoption".

Kenny, I don't think no one was referring to anything about international adoption, only the reactions and questions from people who ask questions about adoption. Just as so many know nothing about Open Adoption. Those are some questions and answers that get some "reactions" also. I do believe we all are so blessed from the way our families have been brought together. I couldn't imagine our life without Lathan as you could not imagine yours without Sophia. Sorry if you have taken this the wrong way. Safe travels to TX.

  4. Suzi, the US thing is huge in my mind. It is so sad to see the disappointment on people's faces when I tell them that our girls are from TN and TX!!!

    Amanda,

I too see the surprising look on people face's when they ask me and I say TX. One lady asked me if Lathan was from China? What??ohmy.gif

  5. How do these remarks sit with you?:

"The Biggest Loser" trainer Jillian Michaels is getting some interesting feedback for comments she made in Women's Health magazine about the reasons she plans to adopt, rather than give birth to, children. "I'm going to adopt. I can't handle doing that to my body," Michaels told the magazine. "Also, when you rescue something, it's like rescuing a part of yourself."

While the trainer, who famously overcame childhood obesity to become one of the most successful fitness gurus of all time, isn't known for her tact -- she has occasionally resorted to name-calling in her attempts to motivate contestants on "The Biggest Loser" -- her comments about pregnancy have led to concern about how they might influence other women."

What about what these comments say about her ideas of adoption?

Does the Abrazo "Chicks" need to educate Jillian Michaels on adoption???

  6. We sent in our application on Friday, March 12! I went ahead and filled out the orientation paperwork and sent in payment with the application, just out of wishful thinking that we could possibly get in for the April 30-May 1 orientation!

I know adoption is a leap of faith in many ways, but we're trying to be as budget-conscious as possible. I wanted to have our currently approved TN home study updated for TX standards so that we were "good to go" when we went to orientation. We're working with a local social worker and she can squeeze us in on the afternoon of March 29 (my hubby's b'day!)... I'm just wondering if it's too presumptive for us to go forward with this - knowing we might not get into the April/May orientation - and knowing the home study has to be updated every 6 months.

    Advice?

    Thanks!

    Melissa

    Melissa,

The homestudy is good for one year. I'm sure it felt wonderful to put your application in the mail. Adoption is a leap of faith but worth every step and leap.smile.gif

  7. When we were waiting to bring Azucena home, I went yard sale crazy smile.gif I love yard sales anyway, but I really went nuts once we started our adoption paperwork. It was amazing how many beautiful and near-perfect condition clothes, toys, and children’s books I could buy for as little as 25 cents a piece! I overbought on purpose so that I could sell some of it on ebay... and made about $1000, thus paying for all the clothes, toys, and books that I kept for her. It saved money and gave me something useful to do during my wait. And every season I go “shopping” in my guest room closet for larger sizes. I even have some things put away for when she’s 6-7 years old, all from yard sales before she was born in summer 2006!

We got her Peter Rabbit nursery all ready – painting and decorating the room, putting together the crib and changing table, getting a nice chair to rock in, etc. Doing all that made it feel real. Little did we know that the nursery was going to sit there for 2 ½ years before she finally came home! But when she did, she was so excited to see her “bunny room” that we’d been telling her about. And she was in the crib for about six months before we replaced it with a toddler bed. Here’s a photo of her nursery.

What a beautiful nursery!! Thanks for sharing!
