BirthGrandparents in the News

In New Jersey, a grandfather is fighting for the right to adopt his three granddaughters, all of whom are in state foster care, but he's hitting roadblocks due to a prior conviction record: What Should the Courts Decide?

While the article states this grandfather has not led a crime free life, it does communicate how he feels about family and how the girls feel about him. He is their family and I believe the courts need to respect that...people do make mistakes in life and it sounds like he has taken strong necessary steps to turn his life around in the last 7 years. Since terminating parental rights can take some time, why not let the grandparents be the foster home and then the state can monitor through visits if they feel necessary to determine things are going well, before an adoption is final. The focus should be on what is in the best interests of the girls....

Ron Ford, the birthgrandfather of Sean Paddock, an adoptee who died in the care of adoptive parents who are facing trial for his death, has filed a lawsuit in his efforts to secure answers from all those responsible: Carrying the Torch for Sean.

This makes me sad and angry at the same time. The signs of abuse were there. Doesn't seem like anyone investigated the first bruises that appeared on Sean. I agree with the grandfather. No one wants to take the fault in this case. Sounds like it started at placement time and then went on from there.

Here's a fascinating piece of adoption trivia that hasn't apparently hit the mainstream media here in the USA:

Birthmom and birthgrandmother Joni Mitchell dedicated her latest CD, "Shine", to her birthgrandkids (have a listen HERE and click here to read a review). She also is collaborating with the Alberta Ballet Company on a show the dance troupe is doing that features music Mitchell wrote years ago: Both Sides Now

Yikes! In Missouri, a grandmother has been arrested for her efforts to hire a hitman to kill the adoptive mother of her birthgrandchildren: read the story, here. (With relatives like this, who needs a crazy mother-in-law?!) The children had been adopted in 2010 and 2009, and the birthgrandma, who lives in a motel, had reportedly been arrested for previously filing false reports against the adoptive mom in question. According to another media report, it was the birthmother of the children, who lives in NC, who alerted authorities to her mother's threats.

The bright side is that this is certainly testimony to what you (elizabeth) always tell us ... that birthparents feel protective of the adoptive parents they choose and the family they helped create (by placing a child with that family). I didn't read the article just noticed it was the birthmom who alerted police.

Whew...thank goodness not all US BIRTHGRAMAS are nut cases…Some of us (birth grandparents) do support, understand, accept, acknowledge what is not only the best thing for our grandchildren, but our children and entrusted parents..

Seems like it took awhile, but Angelina Jolie recently took her son Pax back to Vietnam for a visit with his birthgrandma:

(Now, if she'll make good on promises to help daughter Zahara reconnect with her birthrelatives...?)

ya hooh for pax to connect with his birth grandparent...........how many years later?

we continue to hope that our families will be able to maintain at minimum yearly visits and we hope to continue to add blood familial connections over time. Esperanza must know where she comes from and who carries her past. she looks like my extended family, but i want her to always connect physically to her original mom and dad and siblings.

we all do what we cando........and hope it is enough.....
