:( These are indeed very difficult situations that tug at the heart. Life is so hard it seems for some and so easy for others. We will be praying for this mother and her two children and I too pray for a fairy tale ending, praying God will bless all the families involved and maybe a family not involved at this time but maybe will be in the near future.

Teresa :)

Unfortunately, the mom involved has lost her housing and can no longer be reached. The only family Abrazo had found that agreed to a phone call with her was not able to make contact in time, but we appreciate their efforts to do so.

We pray that she finds safe shelter for herself and a brighter future for her precious children.

Thanks for asking, though.

"Recent studies have shown that mothers with HIV or AIDS who get good prenatal care and regularly take antiviral drugs during their pregnancy now have less than a 5% chance of passing HIV to their babies. If these babies do get the HIV virus, they tend to be born with a lower viral load (less HIV virus is present in their bodies) and have a better chance of long-term, disease-free survival."

--About HIV: Helping Prevent Maternal Transmission

Abrazo is working with a young mother-to-be who is HIV positive and getting prenatal care for her biracial (Anglo/African-American) baby boy who is expected to be born in late November/early December. She longs to find a Texas couple or family who are/will be faithful open adoption participants. If you or someone you know is homestudy-ready and open to a situation such as this, please contact Angela Martinez at 210/342-5683. Thank you!

We are also working to find a potential family for a biracial (Anglo/African-American) baby girl due in two-and-a-half weeks.

The mother has had quality prenatal care, which has identified that her fetus has a type of brain malformation (called "ventriculomegaly") that "may or may not" cause the child to have ongoing hydrocephalus and/or some level of neurological development issues.

The specialist has stated that the finding is "somewhat concerning as it does represent an increased risk of mental retardation... ranging from almost normal to extremely impaired... facial structures appear to be normal... there is no evidence of cleft lip at this time."

This will be a special needs case, and time is of the essence, as the mother is losing hope that there will be any family out there for her baby and the due date is imminent.

If you or someone you know might be open to considering this little girl's case, please contact Angela Martinez, LMSW at 210/342-5683 at once. Thank you!

Why is it that I want to help every baby in need? Even when it is not really appropritate.

I still think about a dwarf boy from a few years ago that was written about in this thread. I wanted to help him, but didn't and it bothers me. Did he find a loving home? Is he in state care? Could we have made his life better? The movie "The Blindside" is proof again that a little bit of love can change the world.

I'll pray for these children and thier birthfamilies. Please help them find a home.

Does the family have to live in Texas? Praying for this mother and baby!

I have the same problem! I often wonder about that baby also. We were told about a child with dwarfism that is 2 in foster care in San Antonio. He is up for adoption. The state has been looking for a home for a 1 and half. Makes me wonder if it is him!

We, too, are left wondering whenever referrals of children end up elsewhere. In the case of the little boy with dwarfism from two years ago, the hospital social worker who had contacted us got disgusted that it was taking too long to find a family and the last we'd heard, she'd called that big adoption company in Fort Worth, instead. Your question leaves us wondering whether they got the job done, or if the hospital ended up having to turn that little guy over to the State? (Sigh.)

In answer to your question about the referenced nursery note: that mother did not have a geographical requirement (it was only the mother with HIV that wanted Texas families only.)

Thanks for asking... we have been able to assist one of the two mothers whose needs we posted recently; the other has gone elsewhere to seek assistance.

Note: this post does NOT concern any of Abrazo's cases... but I ran across a beautiful sibling group in need of a family on the State website today (EMILIA, NOVALENA & KEYSHAWN), and just wanted to share it here, in case anyone we know might be able to provide a loving home to these precious kids, or any others on this site:

Elizabeth, I have heard that it is very hard to adopt children out of the state system across state lines. Is that true? Just curious - we have looked at the TARE website many times and wondered.

I think it's not a simple process, but it CAN be done, and the older the child, the more urgent the need! Please don't give up on the bureaucrats, if this is something you've considered... these kids need homes so desperately!

Abrazo always says that what matters most to us is that our families are found by whatever children need them most, whether the placement occurs at Abrazo or beyond... so towards that end: Abrazo has been contacted by another agency seeking a Texas-only couple who are active in a conservative Christian/non-Catholic church and have been married more than 3 years, to adopt an already-born baby boy whose older birthmom desires a fully-open adoption that will include ongoing visitation. His birthmother is a college graduate with significant mental health issues, a history of drug abuse and Hepatitis C; the baby's HIV status is unknown as of yet. The baby (whose mother is Anglo and whose father's race is believed to be Anglo or Hispanic) was born at term by C-section on March 1, 2011. He was born with cyanosis, persistent pulmonary hypertension, spontaneous pneumothorax, and transient tachypnea. After an extended NICU stay, this little boy was moved to foster care, where he is awaiting the selection of an adoptive family, but his agency lacks appropriate prospects at present. If you are a devout Christian couple living in Texas, and you have a current homestudy, meet the desired criteria and are interested in being considered for this placement, please contact Brianna at Abrazo, for more information. Thanks!

Lord, please bless this child and his birthmother. If only we lived in Texas, had a current homestudy, and went to church a little more often... we would sure welcome this extra special boy into our lives. I hope someone else can find it in their hearts to hold him tight and call him their own.
