Celebrity Adoptions

You're probably right. TMZ is most likely looking for snark rather than seriousness. And there's nothing like a bit of intelligence to ruin the troglodytes' party!

troglodytes = A person considered to be reclusive, reactionary, out of date, or brutish.

Now that I looked that up, GREAT WORD!!! I will have to remember it for further use!

 When I saw it I remembered back (WAYYYY back) from my early youth a monster when we played Dungeons & Dragons called a Troglodyte.

So, I go do a quick Wikipedia search and sure enough, underneath the standard definition they too have a:

Troglodyte (Dungeons & Dragons), a race of humanoid monsters in the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game.

 how funny and retro

Tina,

Too funny...I was thinking of doing the exact same thing! Then I got distracted (or lazy). Thanks for doing the work for me. I'll have to see if I can work that into future conversations!

I'd already figured out that Phil Spector was the posterboy for Dinner Dates from Hades, but I wasn't aware until tonight, watching that harbinger of Hollywood gossip, Inside Edition, that he was also (yikes!) a dad-by-adoption, having reportedly adopted a biracial son with his then-wife, Lonnie and later, twin boys, too. Theirs was a "Daddy Dearest" kind of childhood, and one of the twins is planning to publish a book about his ordeal. Read it and weep...

This from Rosie O-Donnell.........

Rosie Blogs About On-Air Spat

ABC News

(May 29) - Rosie O'Donnell felt like "the foster kid" on "The View" and admits her chief writer vandalized a photo of co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck after their on-air shouting match Wednesday, which led to O'Donnell's departure from the show, according to a video posted on her blog Saturday.

"I was really just like the foster kid for a year," she said about her stint on the ABC talk show. "I came and we considered adoption, but I really didn't fit into the family, and then it was time for the foster kid to go back home." O'Donnell said in the Saturday night video that she tried to get along with Hasselbeck but suggested they weren't compatible.

"I never tried harder to be friends with someone than I did with her from the get go, but I don't think we ended up there, anywhere close," she said.

O'Donnell's chief writer, Janette Barber, was allegedly escorted out of "The View" studios Thursday after she was caught drawing a moustache on a photo of Hasselbeck. In her video, O'Donnell shrugged off the prank.

"Janette, I love ya," she said. "It was only one photo, people, and it was a magazine cutout."

In the video, O'Donnell clarified her comments about the war in Iraq -- the comments that sparked the now-infamous debate with Hasselbeck

I don't defend the mullahs. I defend the innocent civilians living in Iraq who had nothing to do with attacking the United States and who are dying in unprecedented numbers because of the occupation by the U.S. forces," she said. "So I am against us being a bully, the U.S."

Answering a fan's question about whether "EH," apparently meaning Hasselbeck, offered any apologies, O'Donnell said EH spoke with "Kelli," apparently referring to O'Donnell's domestic partner, Kelli Carpenter.

"She called, and Kelli and her spoke for a long time," O'Donnell said. "And I haven't spoken to her, and I probably won't, and I think it's just as well. And I wrote her an e-mail, and she wrote me back. And there you have it."

After months of insults, controversy and showdowns, the news of O'Donnell's departure from "The View" spread fast and furiously.

Though her contract wasn't up until June 20, O'Donnell announced Friday she would not return to "The View" after a controversial blowout Wednesday with her co-host, Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

On Saturday, Michael Ausiello, senior writer for TV Guide, said the search for O'Donnell's replacement is already in full gear.

ARHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH WHY did Rosie compare herself to a Foster Child...as a Mom via adoption and with a "bad match" foster child situation ( if that was really the case) WHY would she make such a dopey comment? What if that little girl reads that? Just another stab in her heart too...what happended to positive adoption language? Urrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Pretty ridiculous! The scary thing is someone just may let her have them.

What's almost more upseting is the adoption ad below it: "Have a newborn baby quickly...we specialize in open adoptions!" :(:o:blink:

That surely sends the wrong message as to why one should consider an open adoption!

Surely there is no SW (or judge for that matter) that would approve her for placement or grant the finalization anytime in the near future. I know that people can change over time, so I wouldn't say that she will never be a fit parent, but her current plans certainly don't seem to show that she is ready for the seriousness of parenting!!

WOW!! The story is funny yet very scary at the same time! Thanks Elizabeth for posting a comment on the story. You are right she should stick to dogs or perhaps Barbies if she wants to dress up a doll. ;)

Just catching up with this thread....and had to comment....

When Rosie had her own show, she was talking about her son Parker's adoption, and how she explained it to him. She explained to Parker that "God made a mistake" and put Parker in the "WRONG MOMMY'S" tummy, and that SHE (Rose) was really supposed to be Parker's mom!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm definitely assuming hers was a closed adoption, because WHAT A STAB IN THE HEART those comments would be to ANY birth/first mother! Not only was that statement insensitive to birthparents, but adoptees as well have enough loss issues without having adoption simply explained away by being told it all happened because they were simply placed in the wrong woman's body (as a baby)!!

I truly believe that folks such as Rosie and Paris have been placed on this earth to give us irrefutable evidence that there really are people in the world who are more obnoxious, stupid and annoying than anyone we could possibly come across in our own neighborhoods.

In other words, count your blessings...

I know Rosie has legions of fans out there but when it comes to her adoption stories, I'm not one of them. (I'm curious whatever became of the little girl Rosie had fostered in FL with the intent of adopting but then "gave back"? How will that child understand why she didn't "merit" adoption by Rosie in the end?)

Nicole Kidman recently alluded in an interview that there is an interesting story behind her son's adoption, one that may come out someday. Back then, when the second Mr. & Mrs. Cruise were first adopting, there was a story floating among adoption professionals that Mr. Cruise had bolted from one Florida hospital in a fit of rage, leaving behind a newborn baby they were to have adopted, because their identity had been leaked by the hospital staff and the birthmom "learned who they were, gasp!"

I appreciate the grace with which Michelle Pfeiffer talks about her adoption of her daughter, Claudia Rose. Michelle bought the film rights to "The Deep End of the Ocean" from Abrazomom Jacquelyn Mitchard, who reportedly picked Pfeiffer's offer over Ron Howard's at the time because Pfeiffer, like Mitchard, had adopted as a single mom. (Pfeiffer was later sued by a man claiming to be Claudia Rose's birthdad, who alleged that Michelle had stolen ideas from a screenplay he'd written and that he'd not given his consent to the adoption of the child, who was born to a New York nurse who was already raising four kids alone.)

Years ago, we were contacted by a NY social worker working with an attorney who was seeking an "appropriate" placement for a well-known film director and his (very young, also adopted) wife. They wanted a newborn of part or full Asian descent; it just so happened Abrazo had a birthcouple wanting to place with a couple in which one spouse would also be Asian. However, the plan fell apart when the NY attorney told us that "under no circumstances would any openness be allowed"; the birthparents could never know where their child had gone, and the couple would never provide any post-placement progress reports or photos, not to either the agency or the birthfamily.

Furthermore, they demanded that Abrazo transfer custody of the baby to an attorney in FL, who would transfer custody to an attorney in NY, who would then see that permanent custody-- and a "doctored" birth date-- would be assigned by a court there... all for "the baby's protection." Needless to say, we didn't go for that, and the baby in question is now growing up happy and healthy with a loving family in North Carolina, who are still reaping the benefits of their faith in open adoption.

how interesting, Elizabeth. I completely believe the "fit of rage" story because during my many years of covering celebrities for magazines, I heard my share of stories that fit that same profile. Scary stories, as a matter of fact, where people were left fearing for their safety. Apparently rage is a common emotion for TC.

Here's a fascinating interview our friends at PACT did with actress and mom-by-adoption Jamie Lee Curtis: READ THIS. (What do you make of her opaque response to the question of whether or not they're still in touch with their children's birthparents, and her suggestion that the laws be amended to provide insurance coverage for birthparents through the adoptive family's policy?)

Interesting interview.

Re: open adoption: It sounds like she is for it, but her circumstances (fame) complicated things so that it didn't work with Annie's birth mom -- not saying that is OK. But I am sure that being famous adds yet another aspect to relationships. Who knows if her "wishes" that she thought would be respected were reasonable or not . . . but her talk about theories and reality are probably true for many adoptive parents who are OK with the theory of openness, but than the reality of human nature gets in the way and life gets messy --meaning it is easier in theory than it is in practice and takes effort.

Re: campaigning for changes: I very much respect her for allowing her children their privacy, especially since, as children of a celebrity they have lost some already. I hope she is a strong advocate for issues when her children are older. I personally would have loved for my insurance to cover Kate's birthmom's expenses, but I am not sure if that's really reasonable to ask for as a sweeping change. Other things she mentioned, like allowing title/property etc. to pass to children who were adopted seem a better thing to put energy into as they legitimize the family relationship formed through adoption rather than just providing monetary assistance.

Just when you think all celebrities adoptions have weird circumstances (Madonna, Rosie, etc.), along comes Jamie Lee Curtis, who seems incredibly normal, respectful and insightful. She's not saving the world; she's not trying to make a political statement. She wants to be a mom, and adoption was her route to fulfill that wish. God bless her!

Her response to contact with the birthmother was indeed vague, but who knows that the reasons are behind that. It would have been nice to hear, "Yes, we have a relationship," but that may not be her reality.

One very interesting tidbit was her response to acting roles and motherhood. Often, we hear actors talk about being "brave" and accepting roles that are waaaaayyyy out there, either in terms of violence, sex or some other thing that kids really shouldn't be watching. Frankly, I think it's more brave to acknowledge that your life, with children in it, is simply not your own anymore and that your choices really need to reflect that. She seems to believe that, too.

All in all, a very interesting interview
