That link makes me smile as I think of all the wonderful families Abrazo has helped create in my short time being a part of the forum. It has been so much fun to celebrate with all of those I know and only know through the forum. Here's to many more happy families!

Danette, a completed home study is not required, but once everything is done, you can start taking birthparent calls. There is so much to do to prepare for placement, but it is SO worth it...even if you only have a couple of days to get it ALL done! Enjoy the process, because your life surely changes forever...in an amazing way.

I couldn't agree more, Elizabeth. That just brought a BIG smile to my face thinking of all the newly formed families :D

Welcome, Danette & Chris! Believe me, it's worth all of your time completing that application! Get busy ;)

Welcome Danette & Chris! I think getting the homestudy started and possibly even complete prior to orientation is worth it. It can make you available to recieve those potential birthparent calls sooner and there is plenty of other things to do after orientation - like get a nursery ready! :D If you decide to get the homestudy started, make sure that the homestudy worker that you use knows Texas adoption requirements and that they know what Abrazo wants in their homestudies. The Abrazo gals can probably recommend homestudy workers in your area that they have worked with before.

Wow, time Flies! Just 9 short months ago we were placed with Nathan and now, looking back on that August photo, it's hard to remember him ever being that small!

Best wishes to all those applying and to all the PIWs who wait patiently to be watched with a special birthmother.

Peace be with you all,

-Adam

PS) GET THOSE APPLICATIONS IN!!! :D

Welcome Danette and Chris -

You will really enjoy the forum and all the people. You can get so many questions answered to help you through the process.

Home Study - no you don't have to have completed. But, I will say, the sooner it is completed the better, you never know if you will get a call or tapped on the shoulder that same weekend as orientation. I have seen families come down for Camp Abrazo and go home 1 or 2 members larger and that weekend isn't even orientation.

Good info and please also accept another big forum WELCOME! :D

The only thing I might add is I don't believe you can receive a birthparent call until you have a completed homestudy on file with Abrazo, so the sooner you get the done, the faster you can start talking to birthfamilies :D (provided all goes as planned with the application and orientation ;) )

Bottom line, get that homestudy started (and be sure your social worker is familiar with the Texas Homestudy requirements).

We had ours complete prior to orientation (due to a prior adoption attempt) and had our first call 3 days after we left orientation. It was a very exciting time!

But, don't let not having it done keep you from applying and getting to orientation. Most folks don't have it ready yet when they attend, but you'll see why you want to have it done ASAP after attending. There are wonderful stories of folks going to Orientation and coming home with babies! :D

Best wishes to you on your journey Danette & Chris.

Thank you to all of you who responded to us with all the helpful information. I talked to Abrazo and they suggested I wait to do my home study because we are moving to Chicago in the next 2 months so we are going to shoot for the September orientation when we are settled and do our home study there. If anyone has done their homestudy in Chicago and know of a Home study in Chicago please let me know. We are looking forward to finishing our paperwork and awaiting for the invitation to the orientation. Thank you again for all the encouraging words and links to get us motivated.

This would inspire me!!! My husband and I made "a game" of our homestudy - we treated it like a scavenger hunt. In fact, I had to buy him an expensive dinner because he was done with his list before I was!!

Hi, we sent in our inquiry form a few weeks ago and are waiting to hear back from them. I'm not sure how long it should it take, it's great to see everyone on the board participating. Thank you. Brandy

Best wishes to you Brandy. While I can't speak for the Abrazo team, I can tell you in my experience, I've see that their response times can vary depending many other things going on at the agency (Orientations, training, BABIES! being delivered, Intakes, etc....). It is an exciting time and I'm sure you are full of anticipation. My best advice is to be patient as it probably won't be long before you hear something and once on board, it's a wild ride!:D;)

I wish you all the best on your journey towards growing your family through adoption and hope that it is a good fit between you and Abrazo. Their program has made many happy families (us included)!

Peace be with you,

Adam

Adam. .. you practically took the words out of my mouth! Or, should I say "off my laptop!" I was just getting ready to post something very similiar about why Brandy might not have heard something yet. An upcoming orientation can cause additional activity in Suite 540 and cause a slight delay due to all of the activity if I'm not mistaken.

And, definately Abrazo's wonderful open adoption program has made us a VERY happy family! I know it has also made many, many others a very happy family too!

Hang in there Brandy! It's soooo worth it :)

Limbo is a good time to spend educating yourselves about "open adoption", even when it's not your first (open) adoption. I think you're wise to be here, on this forum. There is alot of really good information, no matter which agency you ultimately sign on with.

Best of luck to you!

Karen

We have a very open adoption with our son's birthmother and her family, and definitely want a similar relationship for our second child. But I'm definitely doing lots of reading!
