  1. I wasn't sure where to post this but the $28,000/month made me think 'when to say when' so in case in anyone is interested..... This Tuesday, 10/9/07, on Oprah: Lisa Ling Investigates: Wombs for Rent (PG) How far would you go to have a baby? Meet a woman halfway around the world who's pregnant with an American couple's baby. Then, why Martha Stewart's daughter spends almost $28,000 a month trying to make Martha a grandmother.

  4. Praise Him from Whom all blessings flow.............. My Mom got her 3 month test results back and so far...cancer free! Hooray! John has been visiting with the chaplin at Walter Reed. The dr.'s are still trying to save the other leg but are preparing him in case they cannot. From what we know now, it is much worse off than we thought. John joined the service partly because he wanted to eventually be a U.S. Marshall and figured it was a good path to get him where he wanted to be. The loss of a leg or even the serious injuries he has endured, mean to him, the death of his dream. Yesterday, a U.S. Marshall came to his room. He told John that he could do book work until he started rehab. Then he could begin his marshall training while still at Walter Reed and that the job was his if he wanted it! John had been so worried about how he would provide for his wife and what would come next. I tear up every time I think of it. From tragedy comes grace. Praise God!

  15. Just curious...but I was wondering...if one were to have had a homestudy in one state, adopted successfully and then moved to another state, would said someone need to have a whole new homestudy in the new state or would just an addendum be needed if one were to wish to pursue another adoption? Hypothetically, of course And does it count against you if you use run-on sentences or end a sentence in a preposition?

  20. I just went back and read the story. I am really bothered by this. I really hope they find out what happened to Eduardo and that justice will be served. There is a homeless guy, Danny, who hangs around campus and frequently near my studio. One of his buddies that is sometimes with him told us that Danny had been beaten so badly he is now in a coma and practically brain dead. The officers in our neighborhood confirmed this. Danny is diabetic and sometimes appears out of it because his blood sugar is so low. We give him ice water on hot days and hot tea when it's cold and new socks in the winter. He's had a rough time of it but he's a decent man. He always asks says hi and asks how I am and about Clara and tells me "God bless you and that baby girl too!" when I walk by. I've seen people (college frat guys) ask him to do tricks for money and be crude to him. I always chastize them and tell them to leave him alone. They don't know that he is allergic to peanut butter or that he has a sister who lives in Florida, nor do they care. Not even the slightest for another human being, a brother in the eyes of God. I think no one will ever know what happened to Danny and who did this to him. Eduardo, I wish you peace in the everlasting.
  21. Dear Eduardo will be remembered. I'm so sorry to hear of this loss. Prayers for his eternal peace and for the family who loves him so. He was here on earth for such a short time but his lasting impact will live on............................... Thank you to the Abrazo family who can go to pay respects. A loving gesture to be sure.
  22. About the home study process This gives some good info on basic home study requirements and what to expect. National Adoption Directory I found this resource helpful. We used the attorney referral link (the attorney we initially contacted referred us to the agency who eventually did our home study who in turn, referred us to Abrazo!) and also the liscensing specialist where you can check out agencies you may use for your homestudy and make sure they don't have any violations and are operating up to code.
  23. Homestudy requirements/Texas standards Try this link Cathy. There are some updates to the standard requirements throughout the thread so check out each page. I feel like there is another thread on this also but I can't find it right now. If you are in Tennessee, depending on where you are, there are some social workers who are very familiar with Texas homestudy requirements. I would imagine Abrazo could give you a referral (after the busy camp weekend) or maybe you could PM another Tennessee family who may be close to you and ask for a referral? Once you contact an agency/social worker, they will give you all the info you need to get going on paperwork and will inform you of all of their requirements. Call around to agencies and let them know you are beginning the process and want to know all about homestudies. They should be happy to tell you! You will find there may be an agency or social worker you feel more comfortable with. We made our choice based on comfort and ease talking with them and also on fees. (We didn't feel it necessary to pay $75 just to talk to someone initially.) Just to clarify, you can go through an agency social worker and not use that agencies placement services. I think there are other ways to get connected with a homestudy social worker who is not associated with an agency but that was not what we did so I can't tell you how. And I may be totally wrong about that! Good luck! Get going on that homestudy no matter what, because the only way to build your family through adoption no matter how you do it, starts with the homestudy! Hope this helps! P.S. Seems like too, that I read somewhere awhile ago, that at some point the Texas standards will require a completed home study before anyone can be accepted into an agency program at all? Is that correct???
  24. I spoke with my Mom tonight who, for the first time since her surgery, sounded just like her self! Maybe even better! She said she feels lighter. Like everyone's prayers have lifted her right up and she is light. She said she feels like Jesus is just carrying her through this! Thank you to all who have lifted her in prayer! Thanks be to God for his ever present grace! There was alot of conversation about things that only confused me in my already tired and overwhelmed-by-the-impending-move state. The basics are that she has chosen not to do chemo. There are side effects that can be life lasting and altering with results that won't make too much of a difference. I guess the chemo is suggested to be sure the "non-invasive" cells that were found, don't continue to grow. The cancer is a "slow growing" kind and not aggressive. And not found in her lymph nodes. That's a huge deal! She still tires easliy but since she has been put on oxygen and has a wheelchair, that has helped with her fatigue a great deal. She keeps doing more and more to regain her regular activity level. Sure can't keep her down! We talked about how she had been saying for so long that she was sick. She has felt so terrible for so long. She knew she was sick but she said that now she feels like she is going to be better! Today was a great day!!!
  25. Ummm, just a suggestion Cathy, but you could go ahead and get started on that homestudy. You'll need it to move forward with any adoption agency you decide to work with and if you do get invited to orientation, you may want the homestudy done or at least in progress. You know, it has happened that people have had placements right after orientation! Good luck!
